Moncton is a city located in southeastern New Brunswick. There were 71,889 inhabitants in 2016.
Moncton is named in honor of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Monckton (1726-1782), who captured Fort Beauséjour and participated in the deportation of the Acadians.
The Acadians were the first to colonize Moncton where they had created a farming community at a place called The Elbow where the Petitcodiac River changes direction. About 5,000 Acadians were forcibly displaced by the British in 1755.
About 40% of Moncton’s population is French-speaking and many can speak Chiac.
The musician and actress, Marie-Jo Thério was born in Moncton and also the well know band 1755 came from Moncton.
